Lead Acid Batteries vs Lithium Ion Batteries
Lead-acid batteries were the industry standard for decades, dating all the way back to the 1980s when electric trolleys first started to appear.
But the mid 2010s saw a revolution in battery power with the introduction of lithium-ion, a cleaner, more efficient way to power certain tools – including electric golf trolleys. It quickly became the top choice of golfers and golf trolley manufacturers the world over. Since 2017, it's been the dominant power method of electric trolleys on virtually every course. Today, you'd struggle to find an electric golf trolley that isn't powered by lithium-ion batteries.
What makes modern electric golf trolley batteries so efficient?
Weight Reduction
Back in the day, lead-acid batteries clocked in anywhere between 7 and 10kg. But lithium-ion batteries only weigh around 2 to 5kg, depending on your model. This significantly reduces the strain on your trolley's motor and frame, and helps you get around the course much more easily.
Superior Lifespan
Lead-acid batteries were always built to fail, with an average lifespan of around 2 years. Lithium-ion batteries, on the other hand, can last over 1000 rounds, making them the ultimate pick for longevity and consistency.
Full-Power Delivery
Older batteries had a habit of slowing down on the golf course as the power percentage moved closer to zero. But this isn't the case with lithium-ion; this battery offers consistent output throughout usage, so you needn't worry about performance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Some people are under the assumption that lithium batteries require no maintenance, unlike lead-acid batteries, which need regular checks and maintenance. Though this isn't entirely true... Proper care is essential to maximise the life of your golf battery. Regular inspections and keeping battery terminals clean are important for maintaining both lithium and lead-acid batteries.
To extend battery life, recharge lithium batteries immediately after every use and avoid deep discharge to preserve capacity. Draining batteries below 50% is hard on them and often leads to a shortened lifespan and reduced performance, so it's important to keep them as topped up as possible.
-
It depends on the type of battery you're using. But, in general, Lithium batteries can be recharged up to 80 per cent capacity in about an hour and reach full charge in less than three hours. Lithium golf trolley batteries have a fast-charging rate and hold their charge longer than lead-acid batteries when not in use.
For specific charging times, be sure to read the product description thoroughly or reach out to a member of the team for more information.
-
For proper battery storage, remove it from the trolley to prevent parasitic drain. You should store lithium batteries in a temperature range of 10°C to 30°C, and do not charge them if the battery temperature is below 5°C.
This is why storing them directly in your home is always a good idea, instead of leaving them in your car boot, garage or shed.
-
Lithium batteries usually come with a 5-year warranty, while lead-acid batteries last 2–5 years or roughly 300-500 cycles. This should offer you fantastic peace of mind, especially if you're used to the older, less efficient batteries.
But it's always wisest to check the specific warranty terms of your chosen battery before making a purchase, if this is something you value.
