What’s In The Bag Of The US Open Winner

The US Open Championship is one of the four major championships in golf, held in mid-June every year and played by PGA and European Tour professionals from all over the world.

Ever since 1898, the championships have been 72 holes of stroke play, with the winner being the player with the lowest number of strokes.

This year, Matt Fitzpatrick took the top spot at the 122nd US Open.

About the 2022 US Open Championship winner

Matt Fitzpatrick is a professional English golfer, born and raised in Sheffield.

He burst onto the scene when he won the US Amateur Championship at just 18 years of age – becoming the first Englishman to win the title in over 100 years.

Having gone on to achieve numerous victories over the years – including the 2022 US Open – Fitzpatrick is now regarded as one of the finest golfers in the world.

He joins Jack Nicklaus and Juli Inkster in being the only golfers to win a US Amateur and US Open on the very same course (The Country Club in Brookline).

But what we all really want to know is, what equipment did Matt Fitzpatrick use to secure the win?

Let’s take a look at the golf balls, clubs and grips the Englishman had inside his golf bag for the 2022 Open...

  • Driver

Matt’s driver of choice was a custom Titleist TSi3, with a 9 degree (A1 SureFit Setting) loft and Mitsubishi Tensei AV Raw Orange 65 TX shaft.

The TSi3 is designed for players who create consistent contact and require a little extra control over their flight. It features a new adjustable CG (centre of gravity) track design for advanced speed-tuned performance and the clubface delivers exceptional ball speeds at every hit.

  • Fairway Woods

During the 2022 US Open, Fitzpatrick was seen lifting a 3-wood from his golf bag, the Ping G425 Max (with a 14.5 degree loft and Mitsubishi Tensei AV 65TX shaft), to be precise.

The Ping G425 combines Facewrap Technology with Spinsistency, delivering more distance, ball speed and spin. This club certainly helped the English golfer to tackle longer shots from the fairway, shaving strokes off his score.

The US Open winner also had a 7-wood tucked away in his golf bag – the Ping G410, which is specially engineered to launch the ball high without too much spin.

  • Irons

Matt Fitzpatrick chose two golf irons – the Ping i210 and Ping S55, both of which had Ping CFS shafts.

The Ping i210 is one of the brand’s most forgiving and consistent irons. It produces less spin and helps you to gain more distance without sacrificing control.

The Ping S55 iron provides extra distance and control but also increases workability and forgiveness. A thin line along the top helps to focus the eye on the impact area for enhanced precision.

  • Wedges

Most golfers carry at least three wedges in their golf bag, and Fitzpatrick is no exception! He opted for the Titleist Vokey Design SM9 wedges in 52, 56 and 60 degrees – all with True Temper Dynamic Gold Tour Issue S300 shafts.

The SM9 features a progressive centre of gravity (CG) that helps to optimise ball flight, accuracy and forgiveness. The design team raised the height of the CG in the higher lofts to promote a lower, more controlled ball flight.

Titleist Vokey SM9 wedges also feature patented Spin Milled grooves for maximum spin and durability.

  • Putter

After signing him to their Tour staff, it’s not surprising that the Bettinardi DASS BB1 Flow Tour Dept was Matt’s putter of choice in the US Open.

Milled from a single block of 303 stainless steel, the DASS BB1 Flow putter guarantees a durable, responsive and solid feel.

  • Grips

The English golfer opted to use the most popular grip in the golf market to date – the Golf Pride Tour Velvet Grip.

The Tour Velvet Grip features a non-slip surface pattern for maximum playability and provides comfort and confidence with every shot.

  • Ball

To help him win the US Open, Fitzpatrick chose the Titleist Pro V1x golf balls. These are designed to offer low long game spin, penetrating ball flights, more greenside control and a softer feel.

When compared to other golf balls, the Pro V1x provides the best combination of speed, spin and feel, which is ideal for better players like Matt Fitzpatrick.
