Frequently Asked Questions
-
Yes. Under the rules set out by USGA and R&A, you are allowed to use a Ping ChipR in tournament play. This is because, as a club, it conforms to the official descriptors of a golf iron.
However, it’s very rare that you’ll see tour players using the ChipR. This is because they’re already well-equipped to deal with such shots using the more traditional clubs in their bags.
But if you struggle with your short game around the green, the ChipR will make a welcome addition to your collection.
-
The ChipR combines elements of a putter and a wedge.
It has a shorter shaft than standard wedges, bringing you closer to your work, and replicates more of a putting stroke than a wedge shot. You may also see this club referred to as the ‘Ping ChipR wedge’, which isn’t entirely accurate.
A traditional wedge also has a much flatter lie angle (around 64 degrees), whereas the ChipR falls closer to 70 degrees.
Speaking of degrees, we should mention the loft. The Ping ChipR has a fixed loft at 38.5 degrees - similar to that of a pitching wedge. But wedges as a whole are available in a variety of lofts, making them a very specific tool for your game.
-
Ping chippers, specifically the ChipR, are available in both steel and graphite, to meet your playing preference.
Steel shafts add extra weight to your bag, however, they also come in handy for an added touch of control in your stroke. This could be a wise choice considering the intended motion of the ChipR.
Then again, plenty of players appreciate the freedom and lightweight nature of graphite, which could greatly benefit you if you lack confidence in heavier, more intimidating clubs. The choice is yours!
-
Yes, you could use the Ping ChipR on the fairway if you chose to. But it’s definitely not what the club was built for.
The wider-than-average base and shortness of the club make it more ideal for a putting-like stroke, rather than a standard fairway shot. So, if you want to achieve distance control from your ChipR in the way it was manufactured for, you should save it for shots where there’s not long left to go to the green.
If you’ve never used a ChipR before and you’d like some extra advice, feel free to reach out to the experts at Clarkes Golf and we’ll do our best to point you in the right direction.
