The secret to buying golf shoes this summer

Looking to treat yourself to some men’s golf shoes this summer?

The chances are – up until the 29th March – your golf gear has been stashed away in the corner of your wardrobe or garage, due to lockdown. Whilst your footwear might not be in terrible shape, a new pair of golf shoes could be the perfect pick-me-up after spending so much time away from the links.

Luckily for you, we have an extensive collection of men’s golf footwear in stock – including leading brands, such as Adidas, Callaway, Duca Del Cosma, Ecco, FootJoy, Nike, Puma, Skechers and Under Armour. Available in an assortment of colours and sizes, you should have no issue finding a new pair for the summertime.

But with so many different designs on the market today, knowing which are best can be overwhelming for any keen or amateur golfer.

That’s why we thought we’d share a few top tips to help when shopping for summer golf shoes.

Pick a golf shoe style

A quick search for ‘golf shoes’ online will reveal there are several stylish options to choose from. In order to select the perfect pair for you, you must consider your requirements carefully, as well as the conditions you often play in.

Spiked or cleated golf shoes tend to be the most common style and have a very classic look. These offer plenty of traction and stability to your swing. They are breathable and water-resistant too which makes them ideal for wet or slippery conditions (i.e. winter golf).

Spikeless golf shoes, on the other hand, are the go-to choice of many golfers in the summer when the conditions are good. They look great, feel comfortable and – despite not having heavy-duty spikes – their rubber studded or dimpled soles provide more grip than a regular pair of trainers! Plus, your golf club will thank you as they won’t damage the course as much as spiked shoes.

Let your feet breathe

Another important thing to consider when shopping for men’s golf shoes is the material that they are made from.

For seasoned golfers, a pair of waterproof and durable shoes are favourable – especially those that are made from leather. They do a brilliant job of keeping the weather out during the autumn and winter, but they’re also breathable which means they come in handy throughout the warmer months of the year too.

Alternatively, polyester can be used to cover and protect the uppers of lightweight golf footwear. As a result of being lighter than leather, these are an excellent choice for those who enjoy walking around the golf course and tend to work out cheaper. Unfortunately, shoes with a polyester upper are not waterproof so, although they will work well in the summer, they aren’t suitable for wet weather play.

Opt for a snug fit

Of course, you want to find a stylish pair of men’s golf shoes to complement your cool attire this summer. But if they don’t fit you properly, the chances are you’ll end up with blisters and won’t enjoy your game as much because they won’t give you the support and stability you need to perform at your best.

To make sure that your shoes fit comfortably, check to make sure that there is approximately half an inch between your longest toe and the end of the shoe. When out on the links, your golf shoes shouldn’t feel too slack or too tight. If you’re in between sizes, keep an eye out for half sizes or opt for the pair that offers the snuggest fit as these will break in with wear.

There shouldn’t be any excess movement when you walk either so, before you buy them, practice wandering up and down in the shop. If you’re ordering online, try them out at home and if they don’t fit, send them back.

Here at Clarkes’ Golf Centre, we will be more than happy to exchange them for another size. If you can’t find the size you need, or if you’ve found a different pair of golf shoes you like, we can offer a full refund providing they are returned within 14 days of the receipt. More details can be found within our returns policy.
