What’s In The Bag Of The 2022 PGA Championship Winner

The PGA Championship is an annual golf tournament that’s organised by the Professional Golfers’ Association of America and watched by millions of viewers the world over.

The event itself is one of four major championships in men’s professional golf. Held at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Oklahoma on Thursday 19th May – Sunday 22nd May, this year saw Justin Thomas take the top spot – defeating Will Zalatoris in a three-hole playoff.

About the PGA Championship winner

Justin Thomas is a professional golfer from Louisville, Kentucky. He joined the PGA Tour in 2015.

Now 29, the American golfer has had numerous career victories – including PGA Tour wins in 2017 and 2022.

Most PGA Tour players have a preferred brand when it comes to their golf equipment, and JT is certainly no exception!

Let’s take a look at the Titleist (and Scotty Cameron) setup he used to win the 2022 Championship.

What was in the winner’s bag?

As with any other PGA Tour winner, Justin Thomas’ golf bag contained a selection of golf clubs, totalling no more than 14 (the maximum number golfers are allowed to carry).

These included:

·         Driver

Justin used the Titleist TSi3 driver with a 10-degree loft and Mitsubishi Diamana ZF 60 TX shaft.

The TSi3 model boasts an adjustable centre of gravity (CG) track for advanced speed-tuned performance, offering greater speeds thanks to an improvement in the club’s aerodynamics.

·         Fairway Woods

JT had two Titleist fairway woods in his golf bag – one being the Titleist TS3 (3-wood) with a 15-degree loft and Mitsubishi Tensei AV Raw Blue 85 TX shaft. This club is a must-have for players who crave exceptional speed and more precise flight control, as the new Active Recoil Channel 4.0 produces a consistently higher and faster launch.

The American also used an 18-degree 5-wood in the Championship – the 915 FD with a Fujikura Motore Speeder VC 9.2 Tour Spec X shaft. This larger, higher-spinning model is extremely workable and forgiving, offering versatility and shot control from the tee and turf.

·         Irons

Thomas added two Titleist irons to his golf bag in the 2022 Championship: the T100 and 621JT – both with True Temper Dynamic Gold Tour Issue X100 shafts.

Offering an improved feel and turf interaction, exceptional forgiveness, and Tour-preferred looks, the T100 irons are the number one model currently on Tour. The winner of this year’s tournament chose a T100 4-iron.

The Titleist 621JT is a custom-made iron, which is designed specifically for the American’s needs and wants. Though not available on the market right now, it’s destined to be a Tour-only prototype in years to come.

·         Wedges

This year’s champion had a couple of Titleist wedges tucked away in his golf bag, including the Vokey Design SM9 model, which has helped some of the best players to hone their short game.

The Titleist Vokey SM9 wedge boasts a variable centre of gravity and spin-milled grooves that maximise spin and durability. Justin Thomas chose a wedge with a 46-10F degree loft and Dynamic Gold Tour Issue X100 shaft.

In addition to this, he used a Vokey Design SM9 in 51-12F and 56-15F degree lofts, and the 60-06K degree Vokey WedgeWorks – all of which had True Temper Dynamic Gold Tour Issue S400 shafts.

·         Putter

The PGA Tour winner chose a Scotty Cameron Putter – the Phantom X 5 Prototype with a SuperStroke Pistol GT Tour grip, to be precise.

It features a knucklehead shaft design to provide a slight toe hang, helping to gain more stability throughout the stroke.

Although the 2021 Justin Thomas Prototype isn’t available from all retailers, a host of other Phantom X putters have been released for the 2022 golf season.

·         Golf ball

Designed to deliver more ball speed and less spin from the clubface, it’s not surprising that JT opted to play with the Titleist Pro V1x golf balls.

Unlike other golf balls, the V1x provides excellent short game control, helping golfers to achieve more distance whilst shooting lower scores.
